Winch & Hoist Inspections

PUWER and LOLER inspections for electric winches, manual winches, scaffold hoists and construction hoists.

LDN Inspection Services provides thorough inspections of winches and hoists under PUWER and LOLER. Our qualified engineer surveyors examine electric, manual and pneumatic winches, scaffold hoists and construction material hoists, delivering clear digital reports.

Winch & Hoist Inspections

Winches and hoists used for lifting, pulling or tensioning operations must be maintained in safe working order. Depending on their use, they may fall under LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998) for lifting operations or PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998) for pulling and tensioning.

Wire rope degradation, brake failure, drum damage and overload protection faults are common issues that can lead to sudden, dangerous failures. Regular examination identifies these defects before they cause injury or damage.

Our inspections cover the complete winch or hoist system including the drum, frame, wire rope, brake mechanism, motor, controls and all safety devices. We provide detailed reports with photographs and clear recommendations.

Key Requirements

  • LOLER applies if used for lifting operations
  • PUWER applies if used for pulling or tensioning
  • Wire ropes require examination as accessories
  • Brake mechanisms must be functional and effective
  • Load rating plates must be present and legible
