Crane Inspections
LOLER thorough examinations for tower cranes, mobile cranes, overhead cranes, crawler cranes and all crane types.
LDN Inspection Services provides statutory crane inspections carried out by specialist engineer surveyors. We examine all crane types across construction, manufacturing, logistics and industrial sectors, delivering clear digital reports with photographic evidence.
Crane Thorough Examinations
Cranes are classified as lifting equipment under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and must be thoroughly examined by a competent person at regular intervals. A thorough examination is a statutory requirement -- it is not the same as a routine service or maintenance check.
The examination covers the structural integrity of the crane, its mechanical and electrical systems, load-bearing components, safety devices, and operational controls. Our surveyors assess whether the crane is safe to continue operating and identify any defects that require attention.
Crane duty holders -- including employers, site controllers, and hire companies -- are legally responsible for ensuring these examinations are carried out and that any defects are promptly addressed.
Key Requirements
- Thorough examination at least every 12 months (6 months if lifting people)
- Examination after installation, re-assembly or significant repair
- Must be carried out by a competent person independent of maintenance
- Defects must be documented, reported and rectified promptly
- Immediate danger defects require the crane to be taken out of service
