Pressure Vessel Inspections
PSSR examinations for unfired pressure vessels, process vessels and storage vessels in manufacturing and heavy industry.
LDN Inspection Services provides statutory PSSR examinations for pressure vessels used across chemical, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, and manufacturing sectors. Our qualified pressure systems engineers carry out thorough internal and external examinations, delivering clear digital reports, written schemes of examination and practical recommendations.
Pressure Vessel PSSR Examinations
Pressure vessels are regulated under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR). These vessels store or process fluids under pressure, and the energy contained within them can cause catastrophic injury if an uncontrolled release occurs. Duty holders must ensure that all pressure vessels are examined by a competent person in accordance with a written scheme of examination.
Pressure vessels are subject to a wide range of degradation mechanisms depending on their contents, operating temperature and construction materials. Internal corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, fatigue, erosion and high-temperature degradation can all compromise vessel integrity over time if not detected through regular examination.
Our PSSR examinations cover the complete pressure vessel system including the vessel shell, heads, nozzles, flanges, internal fittings, safety valves, pressure gauges and associated pipework. We provide comprehensive reports with defect categorisation, thickness data where applicable, and clear recommendations for remedial action.
Key Requirements
- A written scheme of examination prepared by a competent person
- Thorough examination at intervals specified in the written scheme
- Safety valves and relief devices must function at correct set pressures
- Design and operating documentation must be available
- Imminent danger defects require immediate action and notification
Equipment We Inspect
Our pressure systems engineers examine all types of pressure vessels and process equipment, including:
What We Check
Vessel & Structure
- Shell and head condition, corrosion and wall thickness
- Weld integrity and heat-affected zones
- Nozzle connections, flanges and gaskets
- Internal fittings, baffles and linings
- Support structures, saddles and foundations
Safety & Protective Devices
- Safety valve operation and set pressure verification
- Bursting disc condition and integrity
- Pressure and temperature instrumentation
- Isolation valves and drain points
- Data plate and vessel marking legibility
Our Inspection Process
A systematic approach to pressure vessel examination ensuring safety and PSSR compliance
Pre-inspection review of design documentation, data plates and previous examination reports
External visual examination of the vessel shell, nozzles, welds and supports
Internal examination where accessible, assessing corrosion, erosion and cracking
Safety valve and pressure relief device functional testing
Non-destructive testing (NDT) where specified in the written scheme
Digital report with photographs, defect grading, thickness readings and recommendations
