Air Conditioning Plant Inspections

PSSR examinations for chiller units, air handling units, cooling towers and refrigeration plant pressure systems.

LDN Inspection Services provides statutory PSSR examinations for air conditioning, refrigeration and HVAC pressure systems. Our qualified pressure systems engineers examine chillers, heat pumps, AHUs, cooling towers and all associated pressure components, delivering clear digital reports with photographic evidence.

Air Conditioning PSSR Examinations

Air conditioning and refrigeration systems contain pressure components that are subject to the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR). Refrigerant circuits operating above atmospheric pressure, refrigerant receivers, expansion vessels and associated pressurised pipework all fall within the scope of PSSR and must be included in a written scheme of examination.

Modern refrigerants operate at high pressures, and the stored energy within chillers, heat pumps and VRF systems is substantial. A failure of a pressure-containing component can result in rapid release of refrigerant, creating both safety hazards to personnel and environmental damage. Regular examination ensures safety devices function correctly and pressure components remain in safe condition.

Our PSSR examinations cover all pressure-containing components within air conditioning installations including refrigerant circuits, receivers, expansion vessels, safety valves, pressure relief devices, and associated pipework. We provide clear reports that identify defects and recommend corrective actions.

Key Requirements

  • Written scheme of examination covering all pressure components
  • Regular examination of refrigerant receivers and pressure vessels
  • Safety valve and pressure relief device testing
  • Safe operating limits defined and displayed on the system
  • Defects must be reported and acted upon promptly

Equipment We Inspect

Our pressure systems engineers examine all types of air conditioning and refrigeration pressure equipment, including:

Chiller units (air-cooled)
Chiller units (water-cooled)
Air handling units (AHU)
Cooling towers
Refrigeration plant
Heat pump systems
VRF/VRV systems
Condenser units
Evaporator coils
Refrigerant receivers
Expansion vessels (HVAC)
Fan coil units with pressure components

What We Check

Pressure Vessels & Pipework

  • Refrigerant receiver condition and corrosion assessment
  • Expansion vessel diaphragm and pre-charge pressure
  • Condenser and evaporator coil condition
  • Refrigerant pipework, joints and insulation
  • Chiller and heat pump pressure vessel integrity

Safety Devices & Controls

  • Pressure relief valve operation and set pressure
  • High-pressure and low-pressure cut-out switches
  • Pressure gauges and transducer accuracy
  • Safety interlocks and emergency shut-down systems
  • Operating parameters against safe operating limits

Our Inspection Process

A systematic approach to air conditioning plant examination ensuring safety and PSSR compliance

1

Pre-inspection review of written scheme, refrigerant records and maintenance history

2

External examination of pressure vessels, pipework and structural condition

3

Assessment of safety devices including pressure relief valves and high-pressure cut-outs

4

Examination of refrigerant receivers, expansion vessels and heat exchangers

5

Review of pressure gauges, controls and operating parameters against safe limits

6

Digital report with photographs, defect grading, system data and recommendations
